This was in large part related to how the traumatic loss of his mother, and nge from his father meant that he had learned at a very young age how painful loosing a loved one can be, and as such has lived in fear of making meaningful connections.

Tragedy would strike when, during a test, Shinji's mother would disappear while operating an Evangelion prototype; the machine having seemingly consumed her entirely. Acting on its own will, the Eva somehow managed to heal its wounds instantly, and brutally eviscerated the Angel.
